America OnLine (AOL)
AOL – STaR (Secure Transmission and Retrieval)
Concept Date: September, 1997
Completion Date: Version 3 work on going
Current Status: Version 2 in production
Lead Contractor: Entegrity Solutions
Concept: Provide non-repudiation of private communications between AOL and its partners.
Deployment Scope: All transmissions of on-line orders from the AOL NOC to its partners.
Work Performed: Optimization of cryptography algorithms. After the initial delivery some AOL transmissions were exceeding 2G bytes. This transmission size was well beyond the initial design specification.
The client environment was replicated to provide benchmarks of various algorithms under real life circumstances. Cipher seeding proved to be one of the bottlenecks resulting in changes to user tokens.
Benchmarks and optimizations were completed over a six week period.
Evaluation: Successful for the following key reasons:
· Small number of clients allowed for a number of processes to be completed manually.
· Clients were willing to give AOL complete control of the PKI.
· Clients only communicate with AOL, not other clients, thus eliminating the need for revocation and key archival. This simplified the deployment.
