Hongkong Post
Hongkong Post - eCert
Concept Date: May, 1999
Completion Date: December, 1999
Current Status: PKI deployed and in use, Backup features not deployed
Lead Contractor: Baltimore / HP / GTE
Concept: A public PKI to support electronic commerce through out Hongkong.
Deployment Scope: 6 million residents of Hongkong.
Work Performed: Installation of certificate registration components in the test deployment in Massachusetts and the production deployment in Hongkong.
PKI training in Massachusetts, San Jose, and Hongkong for HP, GTE, and HK post employees.
Participated on the design and architecture team with GTE. Charged with building a key escrow system for user encryption keys.
Designed, developed, and delivered a PKCS11 security provider for the Netscape browser.
Evaluation: Successful because:
· A number of community-wide government sponsored initiatives were created to promote deployment.
· Strong CPS, tied to local laws on certificate usage and its limitations.
· Overall technical limitations were discussed prior to deployment of services. Specifically, planned services requiring key escrow were dropped when no workable escrow solution could be deployed.
